Cross Promotion

Promotion of a website through other traditional forms of advertising.

Dailies

Small portions of a film that the crew reviews during the course of production.

Director

The overseer and creative visionary of a film who coaches the actors.

Effective Media Value (EMV)

The value of a placement based on how much audience it received and its recall rate.

Endorsement

Promotion of a particular product, usually by a celebrity.

Entertainment

The act of providing amusement or diversion.

Entertainment Marketing

The promotion of a product by means of movie/television integration or endorsement by celebrities.

Establishing shot

A shot in a film used to establish the location or setting for the audience.

Event Marketing

Marketing products by sponsoring events such as concerts or charity events. (For ex., Revlon Run/Walk for Breast Cancer)

Feature film

A film that is longer than 34 minutes and meant to be marketed.

Featurette

An abbreviated film, which usually depicts and describes the making of a major motion picture (i.e., behind the scenes).

Flashforward

A scene that is taken out of a film’s sequence to show future events that might happen, will happen or are imagined to happen.

FPS

An acronym for Frame Per Seconds, which is the frequency at which an imaging device produces images in a second.

Imax

Currently the largest and highest resolution film format, IMAX footage is shot on 70mm film stock and meant for projection on a special large format screens.

Multiplayer game

A video game where various people can play together or against another at the same time.

Music Video

A filmed rendition of a recorded song that portrays the musician(s).

Negative cost

The total cost of shooting and producing a film. Negative cost does not include exhibition costs such as distribution and promotion.

Next gen

An updated version of a video game or software product.

Outreach

The act of reaching out to people with a message, an event, or an image.

Platform

Electronic hardware which, combined with software, allows a video game to function.

PR

Stands for Public Relations.

Producer

The manager and supervisor over a film’s finances who also often provides creative input.

Product placement

A form of advertising where products are seamlessly integrated into a film or television production in order to increase its consumer awareness.

Production

Phase during which the movie is created and shot.

Prop Master

Person in charge of acquiring and managing all props, objects and artifacts used on a film, television or music video set.

Rough cut

Before the "Final Cut" of a film is put in the can, the editor completes the rough cut. The rough cut contains the entire film in a continuous sequential order including the approximate running time. The rough cut comes after the assemblage which is the initial piecing together of the film.

RPG

An acronym for role-playing game, which is a video game where a player assumes the role of a fictional character.

Screenplay

The written story from which a film or television show is produced.

Set

The set is the illusory environment where the action of the film occurs. Sets are built in order to convey the time and place related to a specific series of narrative events.

Set dresser

Person in charge of decorating a set before shooting.

Shooting script

A final version of a script used by a director to shoot a film.

Show & tell

Typically when a project manager shows prop master available products for a production.

Storyboard

A set of illustrations of the shot and camera movements in a film used by a director to convey his/her vision to the director of photography.

Strategy vs. Tactic

Strategy lays out the goals that should be accomplished, whereas tactics are the methods used to achieve those goals.

Studio

The producing entity or financier of a television show or film. It is also houses the sets where films and television shows are shot.

Synopsis

A brief summation of a film that is often used to market a film idea to an editor or producer.

Trailer

A short montage of screens from a film for advertisement purposes often shown in theaters to promote upcoming presentations.

TV Series

Various episodes of a program made for TV broadcasting.

Viral Marketing

A marketing phenomenon that entices people to encourage others to use a particular brand. Also known as “word-of-mouth marketing.”

Window

The amount of time a film project is exhibited in a particular market or through a particular medium.
